Writing is a skill that can be learned with practice. In order to develop the skill you need to get into the habit of writing regularly but you also need to think about writing too.

Try to write something every day even if it’s just a few thoughts about your day such as:

What was good about today and why was it good?

Was there anything odd or funny that happened today?

Did you read something interesting today?

Did you meet anyone today (you could describe them)?

Carry a small notebook about with you and write down thoughts and/or observations when you get some time to yourself. Over coffee or while you are having lunch perhaps.

When you have some writing to work with type it into your area on the TVCW site to try it out.

Try to produce as many words as you can. They can be about different things the main objective is to get into the habit of writing regularly.

International Day for Sharing Life Stories, May 16th 2008 /

    The web site is here
Description: We invite you and/or your organization to endorse our joint call for Listen! - International Day for Sharing Life Stories, on May 16th 2008. The day will be an opportunity for people around the world to gather in community halls, classrooms, public parks, theaters, auditoriums, as well as websites, etc …

Looking at this made me think about my life story

The routine announcement was a stimulus to thinking about writing something. Once you start to think you have material so it would be useful to start writing too!

and whether I should write something about it. My initial thoughts were that it probably wouldn’t be very interesting but after thinking about it a bit more I concluded that surely everyone is interesting in some way or other. In fact I now remember saying to someone the other day, when she mentioned to me that Jordan had published the third volume of her biography (the person I was speaking to that is, not Jordan, but I digress), that I would rather read about the old guy sitting nursing his pint in the corner of the pub than read about Jordan’s life because it would almost certainly be far more interesting.

Biography or life stories are not everyone’s cup of tea but it might be worth thinking up a fictitious one. Why not make up a new life for yourself and write it?

Look at some of the writing you have done so far. Try to find natural breaks in the text that will allow you to break it up into distinct sections.

Try to develop each of these sections to see if there is potential to expand it in some way.
